The Jig-Saw Jazz
by David Nemeth

“JD Zazie’s ‘Naherholung Playtime (Absence of Wax) continues her redefinition of what a DJ is and how a DJ should sound. This short 15 minute release is an exploration of noise and field recordings through turntables rather than the standard DAW setup up. Zazie’swork combines two sonic worlds so that neither stands out on its own, each absorbing the other, yet maintaining their individuality. Naherholung Playtime is  noise recordings that are discriminating and suggestive of a deeper sound based on their aural dependencies and the artist’s technical discipline. ….”

“JD Zazie can help you to find your way back home again. But don’t be surprised to find your home drastically changed. JD, who some of you might know as a kind of resident DJ at Le Petit Mignon Sanderstrassestyle, has grown into a neu-plunderphonic audio-savant. Armed with CD-players, turntables and an encyclopaedical knowledge of the good, the bad and the ugly she is the anti-thesis to any statement about music.”

“…Also from Burp Enterprise, italian sound artist Valeria Merlini aka JD Zazie played one of the best DJ set I’ve heard in a long long time. Appearing at the Salon Bruit night at ACUD, she played a highly contrasted programm ranging from delicate abstract sounds to more noisy soundscapes, always with a great sensibility and a fantastic attention to details. Her peculiar sound constructions being executed with a stunning sense of form and focus which worked amazingly well. According to the applause she got at the end of her performance, it definitely felt more like a turntable concert rather than a DJ set…”
